The hike begins among granite outcrops before crossing broad desert basins filled with ocotillo, cholla, creosote, and barrel cactus. The landscape feels empty until, almost unexpectedly, hundreds of California desert fan palms appear below the surrounding ridges. Instead of a single dense grove, the palms occupy several spring-fed clusters spread across a broad drainage. The journey to the grove is every bit as rewarding as the destination, making this also one of the best day hikes in Joshua Tree National Park.

My Take
What's not to love about a desert fan palm hike that begins in an oasis? The adventure starts at the edge of Cottonwood Spring and its lush palm grove before leaving the shade behind to cross seemingly endless desert washes. Eventually, the broad desert opens to the mouth of a rugged ravine, where the desert fan palms of Lost Palms Oasis rise in every direction. A challenging but manageable descent into the ravine leads into the heart of the oasis, where massive granite boulders that have broken free from the walls now rest among the palms. Remarkably, these enormous rocks came to rest without destroying the grove as they tumbled into the ravine over thousands of years. The dramatic reveal, the hidden setting, and the sheer scale of the oasis are why Lost Palms Oasis remains my favorite desert fan palm hike in Southern California.

2. Murray Canyon
Best Palm Oasis with Flowing Water
Most desert hikes revolve around the search for water. Murray Canyon lets you hike beside it.
The trail winds beneath towering desert fan palms while a perennial stream supports cottonwoods, willows, and a lush riparian ecosystem rarely associated with the desert. The contrast between green vegetation and rugged canyon walls is striking. Following wet winters, a seasonal waterfall provides an additional reward near the end of the trail.

My Take
Unlike most of the other desert fan palm oasis hikes, Murray Canyon doesn't make you wait until the end to enjoy the oasis. After a short walk across the open desert, the trail slips into the canyon where desert fan palms, flowing water, and the sound of the creek accompany you for much of the hike. Rather than hiking to an oasis, it feels like you're hiking through one. The occasional climbs over rocky canyon walls and ridges add a sense of adventure and provide countless opportunities to take photos and enjoy the lush riparian habitat. If water is flowing at Seven Sisters Falls, don't pass up the chance to take a dip in the natural stone pool.

3. Pushawalla Palms
Best for Geology and Wildflowers
Pushawalla Palms showcases everything that makes the Coachella Valley Preserve special.
The hike follows an Indio Hills ridge trail that provides outstanding views of the surrounding mountains. During exceptionally wet springs, wildflowers line the trail and add a jolt of color to the brown desert terrain. As the trail enters Pushawalla Canyon, groundwater emerging along fractures of the San Andreas Fault System supports multiple clusters of desert fan palms. The hike follows sandy washes and an old road at the base of the San Jacinto Mountains before climbing through rugged desert terrain to a secluded grove of desert fan palms. Along the way, massive alluvial fans spread across the valley floor while the San Jacinto Mountains tower thousands of feet overhead. The oasis itself is relatively small, but its dramatic setting is unforgettable. Few hikers venture here, making Vargas Palms one of the quietest palm oases in the region. For those willing to leave the crowds behind, this hike offers an authentic desert wilderness experience just minutes from the city.
My Take
The hike begins along Snow Creek where, if you're lucky as we were, you'll enjoy several refreshing stream crossings. With no formally marked trail, the route feels more like an adventure than a typical hike. You can choose your own path across the open desert while the road and surrounding mountains provide natural landmarks. A short scramble through a boulder field adds one final challenge before the palms come into view.
Vargas Palms may be small, but its spectacular setting beneath the towering San Jacinto Mountains more than makes up for its size. It reminds us that extraordinary places aren't always the biggest or the most famous; they're often the ones that ask us to slow down, explore, and discover them for ourselves.

5. Hidden Palms
Best Short Hike
Not every memorable oasis requires an all-day adventure. Hidden Palms is a relatively short hike that introduces visitors to the remarkable ecology of a desert fan palm oasis. Following sandy washes into the Indio Hills, the trail ends at a secluded grove sheltered by rocky hillsides. Although smaller than Lost Palms or Murray Canyon, Hidden Palms demonstrates perfectly how groundwater, flash floods, and deep sandy soils combine to create ideal growing conditions for desert fan palms. Its shorter distance makes it an excellent choice for people with limited time or hiking experience.
My Take
Hidden Palms has become one of my favorite palm oasis hikes because it packs so much into a relatively short adventure. It's also the first place where we led a guided interpretive hike, so we'll always have a special connection to this oasis. For most of the hike, there's little hint of what's waiting ahead as you follow a sandy wash and broad desert plateau through the Indio Hills. The oasis feels sheltered and secluded, as if you've stumbled upon a secret corner of the desert that few people ever discover.
